Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City is Utah's capital and the center of a metro that runs from Davis County to Draper. About 200,000 people live in the city itself (2020 Census). The median single-family home in the city sold for about $675,000 in the second quarter of 2026, and the Salt Lake County median hit $645,000, the highest on record (Salt Lake Board of Realtors).

Neighborhoods

Each neighborhood has its own guide, and they're very different from each other: condos and new towers downtown, 1890s Victorians in the Avenues, bungalows around 9th and 9th and Sugar House, mid-century ramblers on the west side, and the separate cities of Millcreek, Holladay, Cottonwood Heights and Sandy to the south and east.

Schools

Inside city limits, Salt Lake City School District runs East, West and Highland high schools. The district closed four elementary schools after 2023-24 and has said more closures are likely, so check current boundaries for any address. Millcreek and Holladay are in Granite School District, and Cottonwood Heights and Sandy are in Canyons.

Getting around

TRAX runs three lines: Blue to Draper, Red to the University of Utah and Daybreak, and Green to the airport and West Valley. FrontRunner connects at Salt Lake Central.

What's changing

• The Delta Center is being rebuilt for NBA and NHL, with a sports and entertainment district around it.
• The city adopted a redevelopment plan for Smith's Ballpark after the Bees moved to Daybreak.
• The Power District on the west side is planned for thousands of homes along the Jordan River.
• Salt Lake hosts the 2034 Winter Olympics using existing venues.
